IMPORTANT! Read product Safety Data Sheet before use.
- Carefully read the BG PF9 One-Quart Brake Service System manual before beginning vehicle service.
- Make absolutely certain that you know the proper brake fluid for the vehicle being serviced. Use either BG DOT 3 or BG DOT 4 Brake Fluid as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Do not attempt to service a vehicle equipped with DOT 5 silicone fluid with this equipment. DOT 5 brake fluid is not compatible with either DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid or the components of the BG PF9.
- Read product Safety Data Sheet before working with any chemicals.
- Brake fluids WILL strip paint and dissolve certain rubber and plastic components. Clean up spills immediately.
- Brake system may be under pressure; open fittings slowly and always wear winged safety glasses or goggles.
- Use only brake fluid from a container that has an intact factory seal. Do not store open or unsealed brake fluid as it will absorb moisture and its use could prevent brakes from stopping the vehicle effectively.
- Wear protective gloves to protect your hands.
- Perform services only in well ventilated areas.
- Keep all hoses and tools away from moving engine parts.
- Check all brake lines and hoses for cracks and sharp creases that could impede flow.
- Store and dispose of used brake fluid in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Always follow vehicle manufacturer’s recommended brake flushing and brake bleeding procedures!
- Turn “New Fluid Pressure” Regulator Knob counterclockwise to close, then depress Pressure Release Button to remove any pressure trapped in the system.
- Be sure ball valve on New Fluid Hose is closed.
- Attach shop air to air fitting on the back of the BG PF9, the Console Tank Pressure Gauge should read “0.” The BG PF9 contains a separate regulator and gauge to control main line pressure. This regulator is preset and should only be adjusted by authorized service personnel during servicing.
- Remove Fill Cap from top of the Console Tank and pour in the appropriate amount of BG Ultra-Dry Flushing Formula DOT 3 Brake Fluid, PN 85032, or BG Ultra-Dry Flushing Formula DOT 4 Brake Fluid, PN 84032.
Do not use DOT 5 silicone brake fluid or any non brake fluid products with this machine!
- When the Console Tank is filled to upper “Max Fill Line” marker, replace Fill Cap securely.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air, avoid partially filled containers whenever possible. Reseal partially used containers securely. Do not use brake fluid from new containers with broken or missing seals.
- Locate the Suction Hose and attach the soft rubber Suction Wand, PN PF9051.
- Console tank
- Regulator knob
- Pressure/Release button
- Suction control valve
- Suction gauge
- Suction hose
- New fluid hose
- Suction wand
- Mini suction wand
- Dispensing wand
- Bleeder adaptor
- Place vehicle on a lift to gain access to brake bleeder valve(s) on each wheel cylinder. Break each bleeder valve loose and then close to make sure all are functioning properly. Replace any stuck or malfunctioning bleeder valves.
CAUTION: DO NOT use the included Bleeder Adaptors to break loose stuck valves.
- Lower the vehicle to ground level and remove the cap from the master cylinder reservoir.
- Turn the control valve to “Suction On.” Use the Suction Wand, PN PF9051, to remove all of the old brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. For compartmental reservoirs, use the Mini Suction Wand, PN PF9049, to get out as much old fluid as possible.
- Turn Control Valve to “Suction Off” and locate the appropriate Master Cylinder Reservoir Brake Cap Adaptor. Attach adaptor securely as this will be a pressurized fitting.
- Locate the New Fluid Hose, make sure ball valve on the New Fluid Hose is closed. Connect the New Fluid Hose to Master Cylinder Reservoir Brake Cap Adaptor. Adjust the Console “New Fluid Pressure” Regulator Knob clockwise to achieve desired pressure on the Console Tank. If the vehicle OEM prescribes a brake system flushing pressure, use that, if not, set the regulator at approximately 12 PSI.
- Open the ball valve on the New Fluid Hose to fill the reservoir. This process will compress the air in the reservoir leaving a little space between the adaptor and the fluid level in the reservoir. This will allow you to remove the adaptor at the end of the service without spilling fluid. Check closely for leaks around the adaptor seal.
- Once the old fluid in the reservoir has been evacuated, turn Control Valve to “Suction Off” and attach the metal Dispensing Wand, PN PF9050, to the New Fluid Hose. Adjust Console “New Fluid Pressure” Regulator Knob to approximately 12 PSI or the factory recommended flush pressure. Slowly open the ball valve on the New Fluid Hose to fill reservoir. Install appropriate Master Cylinder Brake Cap Adaptor. Remove the metal Dispensing Wand, PN PF 9050, and connect the New Fluid Hose directly to the adaptor. Open Ball Valve on New Fluid Hose slowly to pressurize the system and check for leaks.
Alternate instructions for using Direct Contact Adaptor (for example, GM Bypass Adaptor, PN PF9005):
With the fluid reservoir empty, and the ball valve on the New Fluid Hose closed, connect the New Fluid Hose to the Direct Contact Adaptor and hold it over the reservoir. Open the valve on New Fluid Hose and allow fluid to flow through the adaptor and into the reservoir until all air has been purged from the adaptor. Submerge discharge port(s) of the adaptor into the fluid in the reservoir and close the valve on the hose. Seal adaptor against the orifices in the bottom of the master cylinder taking care to keep the discharge ports submerged.
If this procedure is not followed, air may be injected into the master cylinder plunger assembly and may not come out without bench bleeding the master cylinder.
- Once the master cylinder has been pressurized, raise the vehicle and go to the farthest wheel from the master cylinder, usually the passenger side rear.
NOTE: The vehicle OEM may establish brake flushing procedures on some models and if different from those listed in these instructions, the factory procedures should always take precedence.
- Select the appropriate size Bleeder Adaptor furnished with the BG PF9. Turn Control Valve to “Suction On” and slip the end of the Suction Wand, PN PF9051, into the end of the Bleeder Adaptor. Place the Bleeder Adaptor on the bleeder valve and slowly open the valve. Watch the Console Tank on the BG PF9 and close the bleeder valve when the fluid level hits the bottom marker for the wheel you are servicing. Move to the next farthest wheel from the master cylinder and repeat the procedure.
If it is noted that one wheel does not come clean with the fluid allotted, complete all wheels, release the pressure
as described at the end of this service, refill the tank and flush all wheels a second time. - When all wheel cylinders have been flushed, turn the Control Valve to “Suction OFF” and back out the “New Fluid Pressure” Regulator Knob. Leave the ball valve open on the New Fluid Hose to the master cylinder and depress the Pressure Release Button to release all pressure from the system including the master cylinder. After pressure has been released, close Ball Valve on the New Fluid Hose.
Failure to release pressure from the master cylinder will result in fluid being sprayed when the New Fluid Hose is disconnected from the Master Cylinder Reservoir Brake Cap Adaptor.
- Remove Brake Cap Adaptor and adjust fluid level as necessary.
- Clean and install factory master cylinder cap.
Always test brakes before moving the vehicle!
