Service Instructions for Light Duty and Heavy Duty Diesel Air Intake Cleaning
  1. For light duty diesel engines, add 11 oz. (325 mL) of BG 245 Premium Diesel Fuel System Cleaner, PN 245, to the fuel tank. For heavy duty engines, add 32 oz. (946 mL) of BG 245 Premium Diesel Fuel System Cleaner, PN 24532, to the fuel tank. For light duty diesel engines, use low flow 1.50 GPH spray nozzle, PN 9255-052. For heavy duty diesel engines, use 2.50 GPH spray nozzle, PN 9255-051-2.
  2. Check computer for diagnostic codes and record them. Clear the codes.
  3. If the EGR valve is setting diagnostic codes, it will need to be removed and cleaned manually. Remove EGR valve and clean with BG Throttle Body & Intake Cleaner, PN 406. Replace any torn gaskets or O-rings and replace EGR valve. WARNING! Do not spray BG Throttle Body & Intake Cleaner into the EGR ports! To clean EGR ports, spray BG Throttle Body & Intake Cleaner on a towel and wipe clean. Reinstall EGR valve and leave electrical connector unplugged. Note: Vehicle-specific service instructions for cleaning the EGR and EGR ports are available from your BG Distributor.
  4. Remove air tube and install the BG Universal Diesel Intake Adaptor to the air intake of the engine.
  5. Install the BG Injector Atomizer into the BG Universal Diesel Intake Adaptor.
  6. Close all valves on supply tool. Fill the supply tool with 32 oz. (946 mL) of BG Diesel ISC®, PN 25532. On severely carbonated systems additional BG Diesel ISC® may be necessary. Close fill cap securely and connect the hose from the supply tool to the BG Timer Box. Connect supply tool to shop air and set regulator pressure to 90 psi (6.2 bar).
  7. Make sure the switch on the BG Timer Box is set to “Off.” Connect to 12-volt DC power supply. Many diesels run 24-volt systems; be sure you have a 12-volt source. IMPORTANT! Make sure that RED cable clamp is connected to positive (+) battery terminal and BLACK cable clamp is connected to negative (–) battery terminal. Improper connection will result in engine failure!
  8. Before proceeding with the intake cleaning service, add 11 oz. (325 mL) of BG EPR®, PN 109, to the crankcase of light duty diesel engines, or 32 oz. (946 mL) of BG EPR®, PN 10932, to the crankcase of heavy duty diesel engines. This step will clean the oil passages and restore compression. Be sure the engine oil is changed and a new filter installed as described at the end of the service.
  9. Start engine and bring to full operating temperature. Use throttle depressor to set RPM between 1000–1200. Open ball valve on supply tool and turn BG Timer Box to the highest number which will give the longest time between firings. If the vehicle runs well and does not clatter or knock, switch to the lower number for faster cleaning setting. If the engine begins to clatter or knock, immediately turn off the BG Timer Box and wait for the engine to run normally. Restart service by setting selector to highest number. If vehicle bellows black smoke, decrease engine RPM. If vehicle continues to bellow black smoke, do not proceed with service.
  10. When supply tool runs out of BG Diesel ISC®, shut engine off. Remove BG Universal Diesel Intake Adaptor and BG Timer Box. Reconnect air tube to the intake. Reconnect EGR electrical connector.
  11. Restart engine, raise RPM between 1500–2000 for 15 minutes to dry out pockets of cleaner that may have accumulated. Do not skip this step!
  12. Engine oil and filter are contaminated with cleaning solution and must be changed at this time. WARNING! Failure to change the oil filter and engine oil will result in engine damage.
  13. After oil change, add 11 oz. (325 mL) of BG DOC® Diesel Oil Supplement, PN 112, to crankcase of light duty diesel engines or 32 oz. (946 mL) of BG DOC®, PN 11232, to crankcase of heavy duty diesel engines.
  14. Clear any codes that may have been set.
  15. Drive the vehicle for 5–10 miles (10 –15 km) to remove any loose deposits.
