My dad used to drill the notion of automotive maintenance into my head. “Get that oil changed every 3,000 miles!” he’d say.  

It wasn’t just the oil, he insisted I get a transmission service every 30,000 miles; and, because we lived in upstate New York, he also insisted on mandatory upkeep of the cooling system. And the brakes? Fuh-getta-bout-it! Or don’t forget about it because that was actually part of the state’s annual safety inspection. (Yes, even testing of the brake fluid.)

However, no one ever said a thing about the air conditioning system. We just accepted the fact that it stunk. Our solution? Go buy a handful of car fresheners!

The scary side of A/C system neglect

As a kid, I suffered from asthma. Breathing was a struggle in 90 percent humidity during the summertime. I had no idea what the inside of my 1969 Pontiac Catalina was doing to me or that it was contributing so much to my ailment.

Today, I am one of the millions who suffer from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Because of that, I am the poster child for damage caused by mold, mildew, bacteria, and allergens. In a matter of minutes, my breathing becomes constricted, my eyes burn and water, and my throat feels scratchy enough to affect my voice.  

How to educate others on a car air conditioning service 

Okay, so what’s the first step? Recommend the BG Climate Control System Service. (Hint: This may also mean explaining that the climate control system is just a fancy term for the vehicle’s air conditioning system). Then explain why it’s necessary for their vehicle in the most relatable terms.

Remind your customers how this service can help them protect themselves and their families from these hidden dangers. 

How to tell a customer about the importance of smellin’ the A/C air 

If you need some help getting the conversation started, open with asking about a smell when they started their car that morning. Most likely the answer is yes. And most likely, they don’t know what’s causing it.

The musty smell is the first symptom your customers will notice. From there you can educate them on the benefits and importance of a climate control service. 

Explain the problem. Propose the solution. Outline the benefits. This is the recipe for happy, informed vehicle owners. 

Look at me, teaching others about the importance of automotive maintenance, just like my dear ol’ dad.
