I’ve heard a lot about “low cost of ownership” lately. Honestly, it sounds like a great deal! In fact, I would like everything I purchase to have low cost of ownership: my car, my house, my dog. But if I don’t invest any money into maintaining my car, my house and (for argument’s sake) my dog, I would have engine failure, broken pipes in my sprinkler system, and my dog could have heartworm, or worse, a litter of puppies!
This scenario takes low cost of ownership to the extreme, but isn’t that pretty much what manufacturers are promising when they promote a car that’s low cost to own? Here’s what they’re thinking, “minimal maintenance dollars spent equals customer enjoying a vehicle that costs very little to own.” According to some manufacturers, it could be 10,000 miles (16,000 km) before you see your customer on the service drive for the first oil change.
I’m not saying we should all go back to the 3,000 mile (4,800 km) oil change, but a lot can happen in that first 10,000 miles (16,000 km).
Longer time between oil changes puts a lot of stress on engines and engine oil. Undue stress on an engine puts undue stress on the customer.
